Ricky Ponting cannot explain his team's premature departure from the ICC World Twenty20

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting says he cannot explain his team's premature departure from the ICC World Twenty20 after six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka yesterday

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan hit robust half-centuries as Sri Lanka sent Australia packing from the ICC World Twenty20 with a six-wicket win last night.

aargh! Australia skipper Ricky Ponting's expression says it all after last night's six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in Nottingham sent his team crashing out of the ICC World T20 tournament.

Australia, asked to bat by Sangakkara in his first match as captain, managed only 159-9 in good batting conditions as mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis and fast bowler Lasith Malinga claimed three wickets each.

Opener Dilshan then plundered 53 off 32 balls and left-handed Sangakkara made an unbeaten 55 to fire Sri Lanka home with six deliveries to spare.

Jehan Mubarak hit 21 not out to keep his captain company till the end, which came when Mitchell Johnson sent down a wide off the first delivery of the final over.

Ricky Ponting's men, beaten by the West Indies in their first match, bowed out of the tournament with their fifth successive Twenty20 defeat and ample time in hand to prepare for next month's Ashes series.

Sri Lanka and the West Indies, who take the two Super Eights places from the group, play each other in the inconsequential last league match tomorrow.

"It's disappointing to go out of the tournament and I can't explain why," said Ponting.

"The training was spot-on and there was a good attitude in the group. But in the big moments we haven't been able to play and we made too many mistakes.

"We knew that it would be a huge challenge against their spinners. We knew we had to play them well. We didn't do that and Sri Lanka deserved to win the game. Now we have to move on as quickly as possible and focus on the Ashes."

Sangakkara said it was crucial to have the confidence that they could win.

"It was a great performance. When you play against Australia the key is to believe you can win," he said.

Stanley Burrell, who is best known as rapper MC Hammer, has suffered his fair share of ups and downs. Although his sophomore album, 'Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em,' made history as the first hip-hop album to reach diamond status, selling over 10 million units and affording the Oakland-born superstar his own cartoon and even his own "Hammer pants," Burrell filed for bankruptcy and his career suffered greatly.

Over the past few years, however, Hammer has been back on top, working hard as an Internet mogul and activist. He also starred on the first installment of VH1's 'The Surreal Life.' He will premiere his own A&E reality show 'Hammertime,' which showcases his life in Tracy, Calif., with his wife, Stephanie, and their family of six.

A few years ago, the 47-year-old cofounded an online community site, DanceJam.com, which is dedicated only to dance videos, competitions and styles. Hammer is now a popular blogger and Twitter short-form content creator, but he even has his own Hammertime iPhone application.

BV Newswire caught up with the '2 Legit 2 Quit' rapper to talk about his new show, raising his family and why the digital media world takes him serious.

'American Idol' alum Allison Iraheta officially signed to 19/Jive

And the record deals for American Idol season 8 finalists continue to roll in at a quick clip. After champion Kris Allen's deal with 19/Jive and runner-up Adam Lambert's deal with 19/RCA were announced earlier this week, EW has exclusively learned that 19 Recordings has also signed fourth-place-finisher, rocker Allison Iraheta, and that her debut album will be licensed to Jive Records, like Allen's forthcoming disc. And just like the the albums from her two fellow alums, Iraheta's is anticipated for a fall release. (Talk about an Idol-rific autumn!)

All week long, Idol fan sites like mjsbigblog were abuzz with rumors of Iraheta's signing. The 17-year-old singer sounds like she's barely processing the news herself: “I think I’m still in shock that this is happening -- getting to record my first album and this whole awesome experience is a dream come true!” Allison said in a statement released to EW by 19 Recordings. (Excited? Check out PopWatch's exclusive "Rocker Signed" video!)

Notably absent from the recent spate of deal-making? That’d be polarizing third-place finisher, Danny Gokey. Says a rep at 19: "There’s nothing to report just yet."
